Electric vehicles manufacturing in Egypt

The government is making great efforts to localize electric vehicle manufacturing. It is doing so by supporting that industry and encouraging consumers to use it. Striving to keep pace with global trends & to shift towards clean energy by using environmentally-friendly electric cars.

Over the past year, the Egyptian government has enacted several policies aimed at establishing a market for electric vehicles in Egypt. So the Ministry of Public Business Sector signed an agreement with the Chinese company, Dongfeng Motor Corporation, to start manufacturing EVs in Egypt and rehabilitate its factory.

The EVs will be produced by El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Co., which is affiliated with the Holding Company for Metal Industries that falls under the Ministry of Public Enterprise Sector’s umbrella. According to the Public Enterprises Ministry statement, the project aims to produce 25,000 cars annually in one shift in the first phase for sale in the local market.

The production of Egypt’s first locally assembled electric car “Nasr E70”, priced at LE350,000 is slated to begin in mid- 2022.  45% of the car will be made with locally produced parts, and this portion is expected to increase to 55% within two years. The project depends on selling, distribution, and after-sales services on choosing one of the pioneers in this field in the local market by establishing a specialized company in which Al-Nasr is a partner. The project also aims to take advantage of export opportunities to the regional markets with mutual customs exemption agreements with Egypt for sustainable development opportunities and achieve mutual benefits from these agreements.

Regarding the car “Nasr E70”, its top speed will be 150 km/h with a horsepower of 145. It can go 400 km on a single charge equipped with modern safety systems such as  EBD, ABS HSA, TCS, BA, ESC.  In addition to multiple luxury features, such as a sunroof electric chairs, a control screen, an air conditioner with plasma technology, additional safety systems such as 360° Surround Vision, Radar Reversing, BSD Tire Pressure Indicator.

A package of incentives for electric cars has been set according to the statements of Hisham Tawfiq, Minister of the Business Sector, including a subsidy of EGP 50,000 for the first 100,000 buyers according to specific controls. Also, coordination with the Ministries of Electricity and Local Development to establish 3,000 fast-charging stations over 3 years. Moreover, a project to replace the white taxi with electric cars, similar to the project to replace the white taxi in 2008.

Furthermore, one of the most important achievements in 2020, is allowing electric vehicles to be licensed in accordance with the technical requirements contained in the Traffic law and its implementation instead of temporary permits.

We can deduce from the above that Egypt is seeking to revive its local automotive market, with special emphasis on the electric vehicles manufacturing support, which creates a lot of investment opportunities.  SME Consulting work alongside with clients to discover opportunities, find out and overcome critical challenges, and deliver sustainable growth.  If you want to know more details Contact Us now and take the next step towards your business.
